Learning about nets can be fun if we get to make them as well. Learning by doing definitely creates more meaningful connections than just looking at images of nets or drawing them out. Why do I need to know this, though? Is it ever going to help me in my lifetime?
Everything we learn needs to have a purpose and meaning. Try explaining to a bunch of preteens the reasons for them to practice writing a mystery story or a group of adults the value of documenting their work. Without knowledge of why we do what we do or why we NEED to do it, learning loses its consciousness. Without consciousness, learning is pointless.
